About James Johnston,
Registered Mental Health Counselor Intern

Mr. Johnston provides individual and group counseling and coaching. He leads the Dungeons and Dragons group program and the Teen Outings program.

As a registered mental health counselor intern, Mr. Johnston brings a unique perspective to his practice that is informed both by his academic training and his personal experience with autism. He is particularly adept at providing therapy to young people who have been diagnosed with autism, ADHD, anxiety, and mild learning disabilities.

During his internship with Evolve Learning Community, Mr. Johnston provided individual and group therapy to students who were struggling with a variety of issues. He was particularly effective in helping these students develop coping strategies that could be applied to their day-to-day lives. By providing them with practical tools that they could use whenever they felt overwhelmed or anxious, Mr. Johnston helped his clients to feel more confident and in control.

One of the things that sets Mr. Johnston apart as a therapist is his use of a neuro-affirming approach to counseling. Rather than trying to "fix" his clients or change them to fit a particular mold, he acknowledges their differences and encourages them to embrace their unique strengths and abilities. By taking this approach, he is able to establish a strong rapport with his clients and help them to feel more comfortable opening up about their struggles.

Mr. Johnston's work as an Academic Success Coach at Evolve Learning Community allows him to further support his clients in their academic pursuits. He understands that many young people with autism, developmental delays, ADHD, or mild learning differences face unique challenges when it comes to schoolwork. By providing them with individualized support, he helps them to develop the tools and strategies they need to succeed academically.

In his leisure time, Mr. Johnston enjoys spending time with his family and friends, traveling, and playing video games. As someone who has personally experienced what it's like to live with autism, he has a deep appreciation for the importance of social connections and support networks. In his work as a therapist, he is passionate about helping his clients to build and maintain relationships that are meaningful and supportive.
